A day at the beach promises relaxation, fun, and memorable experiences. But the ocean environment comes with real hazards that demand our attention and respect. Whether you’re planning a quick swim or an extended coastal visit, understanding how to protect yourself from ocean dangers can make the difference between a perfect day and a dangerous situation.

Stay safe during water activities

The ocean is vastly different from a swimming pool, and it requires different skills and awareness. Water safety begins with choosing the right location. Always swim at beaches protected by lifeguards whenever possible. The statistics are clear: more than 80 percent of rescues at surf beaches are performed by lifeguards dealing with rip currents.

Never swim alone

This rule applies regardless of your swimming ability or age. Even strong swimmers can encounter unexpected problems in the ocean. Swimming with a buddy ensures someone is there to get help if needed. When at the beach with children, designate a responsible adult to maintain constant watch. Distractions like phones or books can be dangerous when supervising in the water.

Understand rip currents

Rip currents are powerful channels of water that flow away from shore, extending through the surf zone and past breaking waves. These currents form near structures like piers and jetties, as well as in breaks in sandbars. If caught in a rip current, fighting against it will exhaust you. Instead, stay calm and swim parallel to the shore until you escape the current’s pull. Once free, swim at an angle back to land. If you cannot reach shore, float or tread water while calling for help.

Check conditions before entering

Before stepping into the water, take time to assess the environment. Look for warning flags that indicate hazardous conditions. Ask lifeguards about current water and beach conditions, including wave heights, currents, and any recent hazard reports. Stay at least 100 feet away from piers and jetties where permanent rip currents commonly form.

Time your beach visits wisely

Avoid swimming at night or during twilight hours when visibility decreases significantly. This timing also coincides with increased marine animal activity. Morning and early afternoon visits offer better visibility and typically more lifeguard coverage. Never swim alone during off-peak hours when fewer people are around to notice if you need help.

Enter water safely

Always enter unknown or shallow water feet first. Diving into waves or shallow water can result in serious neck and spinal injuries. Shorebreak waves that break directly on shore create particularly dangerous conditions, as they can cause injuries to extremities and the cervical spine even when they appear small.

Protect yourself from heat and sun exposure

While water hazards often get the most attention, sun exposure and heat-related illnesses pose significant risks at the beach. Heat is actually the leading weather-related cause of death in the United States, surpassing floods, lightning, and hurricanes combined.

Apply sunscreen properly

Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to protect against both UVA and UVB rays. Apply it generously 15 to 30 minutes before sun exposure, using approximately one ounce to cover your entire body. Don’t forget commonly missed areas like your ears, the back of your neck, tops of your feet, and backs of your hands. Reapply sunscreen every two hours, or more frequently after swimming or sweating, even if the product claims to be water-resistant.

Seek shade during peak hours

The sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If possible, plan beach activities for early morning or late afternoon. When staying at the beach all day, take regular breaks in the shade. A beach umbrella rated UPF 50+ can block around 98 percent of harmful UV rays, providing a safer rest area between water activities.

Stay hydrated throughout the day

Heat and sun exposure lead quickly to dehydration, especially in coastal environments where you might not notice how much you’re sweating. Bring plenty of water and drink frequently, even when you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid alcoholic beverages and sugary sodas, which can accelerate dehydration. Pack a cooler with ice-cold water bottles and make drinking water a regular habit throughout your visit.

Recognize heat illness symptoms

Know the warning signs of heat exhaustion, which include heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and headache. Heat stroke is more severe and presents with high body temperature, confusion, rapid breathing, and possible loss of consciousness. If you or someone else shows signs of heat illness, move to a shaded or air-conditioned area immediately, drink water, and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen or don’t improve.

Wear protective clothing and accessories

A wide-brimmed hat protects your face, ears, and neck from direct sun exposure. UV-blocking sunglasses shield your eyes and the sensitive skin around them. Consider lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and pants made from UV-protective fabrics, especially during peak sun hours. These physical barriers reduce your reliance on sunscreen and provide consistent protection.

Prepare for emergencies and stay informed

Emergency preparedness at the beach goes beyond packing a first aid kit. It involves staying informed about potential hazards and knowing how to respond when conditions change.

Monitor weather and ocean conditions

Before heading to the beach, check the official surf zone forecast and beach advisories. Look for statements regarding wave heights, dangerous currents, or other hazards. Weather conditions can change rapidly, and storms far out at sea can create dangerous waves and currents even on sunny days. During hurricane season, tropical storms hundreds of miles away can generate hazardous rip currents.

Understand warning systems

Beaches use flag systems to communicate current conditions. Red flags indicate dangerous water conditions, and swimming may be prohibited. Yellow flags signal moderate surf and currents requiring caution. Beach Hazard Statements alert visitors to conditions like rip currents, cold water temperatures, or potential lightning. Always heed these warnings and ask lifeguards for clarification if you’re unsure.

Keep emergency contacts accessible

Save local emergency numbers in your phone before arriving at the beach. While 911 works in most areas, some coastal regions may have specific emergency services. If you’re visiting unfamiliar territory, note the nearest hospital or urgent care facility. Carry your phone in a waterproof pouch when entering the water so you can call for help if needed.

Know what to do in a lightning emergency

Lightning poses a serious threat at the beach. An average of 33 people are killed annually by lightning in the United States. When you hear thunder, leave the water immediately and seek shelter in a substantial building or hard-topped vehicle. Rain shelters and open structures do not provide adequate protection. Wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunder before returning to beach activities.

Be aware of coastal flood warnings

Different types of coastal flood alerts indicate varying levels of danger. Coastal Flood Advisories signal minor flooding, while Coastal Flood Warnings indicate serious, life-threatening conditions. During tropical storms or hurricanes, Storm Surge Warnings specifically address life-threatening coastal inundation. If any flood warning is issued for your area, move to higher ground immediately and follow evacuation orders from local authorities.

Learn basic water rescue skills

If you see someone in trouble in the water, get help from a lifeguard immediately. If no lifeguard is available, have someone call 911 while you attempt to assist from shore. Throw the person something that floats, such as a life jacket, cooler, or ball, and yell instructions. Do not enter the water to attempt a rescue unless you are trained in water rescue techniques, as you could become a victim yourself.

Plan for marine life encounters

While shark attacks are rare, you can minimize risk by staying in groups, avoiding swimming during twilight hours, and not entering the water with open wounds. Watch for jellyfish warning signs, and be cautious around jellies washed up on sand as their tentacles can still sting when wet. If stung, don’t rinse with fresh water as this can release more venom. Seek assistance from lifeguards who are trained to provide first aid for stings.
